Internship Program

Qualifications: 

To participate in the internship graduate students must be currently enrolled or accepted into a graduate program and undergraduate students must be enrolled in a college or university.  The internship is available during the fall and spring semesters as well as the summer. Basic qualifications are as follows:

  • Internship is open to all majors
  • Must have basic computer skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in person and over the phone
  • Basic understanding of Organized Labor
  • Basic understanding of Government and Legislative process

Job Descriptions:  

  • Issues research
  • Assist with the development and distribution of marketing materials
  • Assist in planning and organizing events
  • Database and record management        
  • Assist with member and community outreach
  • Clerical and administrative tasks

Learning objectives:

  • Gain first-hand knowledge of the Labor process
  • Knowledge of organizing techniques used by union members
  • Understanding of legislative process beginning at the grassroots level
  • Improved communication skills
  • Increased awareness and familiarity with news/media processes
  • College Credit is available

SEIU Local 200United Seeks Organizer

ORGANIZER

SEIU Local 200United is an Upstate New York-wide local union of public and human service workers with offices in Syracuse, Rochester.  Our program is campaign intensive.  New member organizing and contract campaigns are the focus. Local 200United has openings for new member organizers in the Rochester/Syracuse region.

Local 200United is looking for smart, motivated individuals who want to help workers fight for better working conditions, dignity on the job, and improvements in health care for all working families.

Essential Job Functions:

New member organizers help workers run campaigns to form a union in the workplace, often against significant opposition from management and corporate owners.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Through house visits, leafleting, and phone calls, identify workers who are interested in forming a union.
  • Meet with workers (one-on-one meetings, phone calls, house visits, and small group meetings) to discuss the benefits of a union and expected opposition from management.
  • Train and support workers to take action, organize a union drive, and become leaders in the workplace.
  • Plan and lead actions, rallies, events, and strikes.
  • Effectively implement the programs and policies of Local 200United at all times.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills at work, on campus, or in the community.  Experience as a union or community organizer preferred.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.  Bilingual skills a plus.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage time and priorities.
  • Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Good listening, speaking and written communication skills.
  • Automobile and valid driver's license.

- Design tables and reports using MS Access and Excel

- Receives incoming calls, takes messages and responds to questions and answers
- Establish and maintain a filing system
- Produce copies of letters, reports agreements, contracts, etc.., and distribute as directed
- Prepares presentation materials
- Perform other related duties as assigned
