UR SERVICE WORKERS REACH TENTATIVE
CONTRACT SETTLEMENT
14 HOUR
BARGAINING SESSION ENDS WITH NEW
AGREEMENTS
(Rochester) - With
contracts due to expire at midnight,
employee
and management negotiators at
the University of Rochester reached
a
tentative agreement at 11 pm Saturday
on new employment terms covering over
1400
service workers at UR campuses and
its Strong Memorial Hospital
division.
The settlement capped a 14 hour
bargaining session supervised by
Federal
Mediator Kenneth Armes.
Details of the proposed new contracts
will not be released until
union
members have had the opportunity to vote.
A ratification vote is
expected by
midweek. The tentative agreement is being
unanimously
recommended for
approval by both union negotiating
committees.
The two UR service
worker union contracts had been extended
one
week while talks continued.
Negotiations adjourned Friday for the
funeral
of union activist and
negotiating committee member Latasha Shaw whose
life
tragically ended
September 29. The new union contracts
will be dedicated
to her memory
UR
employees involved in the talks include patient
care
technicians, nursing unit secretaries,
surgical assistants,
environmental
and facilities maintenance
employees, food service,
transportation, and
materials processing
staff. They are
members of
SEIU Local 200United
and 1199 SEIU United
Healthcare Workers East.
