interviewed David Cay Johnston, local Pulitzer
Prize winning
author, about his new book, Free
Lunch.
The book’s
sub-title explains why Johnston is in demand:
"How the
Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at
Government Expense
(And Stick You With the Bill)."
Now
ranking second on the
New York Times Business Best Seller list, and
eighth among
non-fiction best sellers, Free Lunch details
the schemes cooked
up by lawyers, lobbyists and politicians to
subsidize businesses
and wealthy individuals at taxpayer
expense.
Among the
most outrageous examples of these schemes are
Tax Increment
Financing, by which sales taxes which consumers
are obliged to
pay are collected and kept by retailers;
subsidies for Wal-Mart
and for-profit health insurance companies;
seizure through
eminent domain of property for private rather
then public use,
and; failure to enforce mandated rail
inspection or to punish
those responsible for ensuing fatal
accidents.
On
Saturday, February 16, from 10 am to noon,
Johnston will discuss
his book at the Rochester Labor Council,
AFL-CIO’s Labor
Lyceum program held at 30 North Union Street,
Rochester, NY.
Audience members will be able to question
Johnston on both the
problems he describes and the solutions he
proposes. Attendees
may also purchase copies of Free Lunch and have
them signed by
the author.
